You’re 22. Where’s Your House?

I keep hearing that young people need to work harder.

Fair enough. Hard work matters.

But have you seen the price of rent in Melbourne lately?

We tell young adults to move out, get a job, save money, buy a house, and somehow still have a social life.

All before 30.

What are they supposed to be? Millionaires with a time machine?

As a social worker in Melbourne, I meet young people who are trying. Some study, some work, some do both.

Yet we still ask, “Why aren’t they independent?”

I think we should ask another question.

Are young people really behind, or are we still judging them by a world that no longer exists?
