Why Does a Phone Call Feel Like an Exam?

Social Worker Pa

I’ve noticed something funny.

Some young adults can text all day, send voice messages and manage five group chats.

But ask them to call and book an appointment?

Suddenly, it’s a job interview.

Some even prepare a script before saying hello.

And voicemail? That’s another level.

As a social worker, I find this interesting.

We often assume being good with technology means being good at communication.

Not quite.

Texting gives us time to think. Phone calls don’t.

Maybe instead of saying “Just pick up the phone”, we should give young people more chances to practise.

The more chances young people have to practise, the easier these conversations become.

After all, nobody was born knowing how to book a doctor’s appointment.

Life doesn’t have an undo button.

Pa made one.
