We're Told to Make Friends. But Where Exactly?

“Just go out and meet people!”

Great advice.

Where, though?

Community centres? Neighbourhood Houses? Libraries?

Absolutely. Many do fantastic work bringing people together.

But finding a place isn't always the same as feeling you belong.

Imagine walking into an activity where everyone already knows each other.

You smile. Say hello. Find a chair.

And spend the next twenty minutes wondering whether you've accidentally joined someone's private reunion.

As a social worker, I think we sometimes underestimate that first step.

Affordable activities matter. So do welcoming faces, flexible hours and reasons to come back.

We shouldn't expect community centres to solve loneliness alone, either.

Friendship takes more than a building and a timetable.

Maybe the question isn't simply, “Why don't people get out more?”

Maybe it's, “What happens when someone finally shows up?”

Because opening the door is one thing. Making someone feel welcome enough to return is another.

Real life gets awkward. Try it here first.
