Since When Does Love Have an Age Limit?

At 25, you fall in love. Everyone says, “How romantic!”

At 85, you fall in love. Suddenly, everyone wants a family meeting.

Seriously?

I recently came across a discussion about sexual safety in aged care. It got me thinking.

We talk a lot about protecting older people. And we should.

But sometimes, we forget they're adults who still have feelings, relationships and choices.

As a social worker, I find this interesting.

We encourage young people to make their own decisions.

Then, as people get older, we sometimes start making decisions for them.

Of course, consent and safety matter. Especially when someone may be vulnerable to abuse or pressure.

But keeping someone safe shouldn't automatically mean taking away their independence.

Maybe getting older should mean more birthday candles.

Not fewer choices.
